The Baboons kicked off their inaugural 6 match Taiwan tour with a 25-15 win against Giants RFC at Bailing rugby fields last Saturday. There were some questions at a post match gathering with GAA legend and future Giants President (so the big man tells me) Barry Cahill over the final score, in particular the Giants’ first try from Michael Carmody (aka Milo, also a fee paying member of the Baboons club!). Photographic evidence later confirmed that the Queenslander did in fact get over for the points. On the request of my captain Ben Hall this photo will now be destroyed.
Baboons’ centre Garweth Smith was man of the match, scoring a hatrick of tries and a no. of line breaks in a strong midfield partnerships with Ben Hall, Trey Mitchell and Spencer Jemelka. One line break, the so called “dummy Ranger” (I think) worked very effectively. The other tries came from the slippery Ben Hall and Nauruan machine Damon Adeang who added to the tally in a well worked forward move near the Giants’ line. The Baboons always looked in control, especially in the 2nd 1/3 when they worked some good forwards phases, but should also have been punished on few occasions as the Giants worked the ball wide but met with strong defensive resistance from centre Trey Mitchell, despite the apparent overlap.
Baboons’ own South African star Jan-Ras Van Der Linde scored a consolation try for the Giants at the end. I’m glad to say that Jan Ras will be representing the Baboons for the rest of the tour!
Next match of the tour will be against Taipei Physical Education University on Saturday, November 1. Kick off is 12 noon. Venue is Bailing fields.
We are very grateful to have such fantastic supporters. Thanks for coming down on Saturday and hopefully see you on Nov 1. Kick off is 12 noon.
Thanks to Romain for the photos.
