New Taipei City 0 – 19 Taipei Baboons

The Baboons returned to their winning ways with a commanding display to beat New Taipei City 19-0 in Dansui on Sunday.
Conditions were perfect and the capacity crowd at the Tan Kang Senior High School waited eagerly for what promised to be a feast of rugby on Tan Kang’s state of the art “hybrid” pitch.
And they got just that in the 1H. The Baboons didn’t take long to stamp their authority on the match with some powerful play in the forwards, noticeably the Nauruan Thor Damon Amecca Adeang and the South African triad of Jan-Ras Van Der Linde, Warwick Taylor and Gareth Hayes all consistently making it well past the gain line. The relentless pressure created gaps and scrum half David Liao obliged with a superb solo effort early on in the half from 30m out after around 10 mins. The Baboons’ back line started to really find their rhythm and always looked threatening. Centre Garweth Smith went over for the second try. Final try of the half went to war horse Gareth Hayes with a charging run inside the opposition 22. Shame he can’t give directions as well as he plays rugby.

The 2H is a bit of a blur but let’s put that down to the mild concussion I received a few weeks ago. I do remember a lot of scrums (I mean a lot!), even more offsides, a few forward looking backward passes and a spear! Oh, and some magnificent defense because fair does, the New Taipei City team did throw a lot more at us in the 2H.

I was going to give man of the match to Duncan Sherman for another great show at flanker, but I’m afraid as a Scot he won’t be able to cope with the attention two weeks in succession. Could go to his head you see!
Instead, I will award man of the match to Ben Hall, not only for a master class at 10 but also for his role as captain and ability to shepherd his flock.
Thanks to our supporters for making it all the way down to Dansui yesterday. A big thank you to Mr. Sheng-Kai Huang for another great collection of match photos. The final match of the Taiwan tour will be on Saturday, December 13 in Tainan vs Chang Rong Christian University. We look forward very much to finishing the tour off in style!
